Grit, Growth, and Gratitude: Celebrating Women’s History Month with WEST

March is here, bringing with it an opportunity to honor, celebrate, and elevate the extraordinary Womens History Month blog image contributions of women in STEM. At WEST, Women’s History Month is more than a tribute to the past—it’s a call to action for the future. WEST’s annual theme this year of Grit, Growth, and Gratitude highlights the attributes that fuel the journeys of women in STEM and beyond.

Progress & Inspiration Brought by Women With Grit, Growth, and Gratitude

Women in STEM have faced barriers for generations, yet they rise, innovate, and forge paths for those who follow. Grit is the determination that pushes women to break barriers and rewrite history, from Marie Curie’s groundbreaking discoveries to Katherine Johnson’s brilliance in space exploration. Growth is the fearless pursuit of knowledge, the drive to adapt, and the courage to challenge the status quo. Gratitude is the recognition that we stand on the shoulders of pioneers, mentors, and colleagues who empower us to push forward.

For example, WEST’s Board President, Karin von Hodenberg, says her inspiration is her mom. “She got an advanced degree, has brought up 3 kids, has gone through a variety of tough times throughout her life and still comes out stronger. She's a great example for all of us kids (and family).”

WEST Board of Directors member Kellye Eversole adds that she is inspired by “former Senator Nancy Kassenbaum - she was the epitome of a well grounded Senator who always did what was best for the country. Then the many women of the Special Operations Executive during World War II -- they risked their lives to help save the world from fascism.”

Aditi Dubey, WEST Advisory Board member, adds “Kaitlin Kariko. She's truly a trailblazing scientist that faced many struggles throughout her career as an immigrant. But she never gave up and believed in her work, and now it's had such a positive impact on the world! Throughout it all she has remained true to herself and humble, using her voice to create space for women in science.”

Women’s History Month reminds us that progress doesn’t happen in isolation. The stories of perseverance and achievement inspire us to continue advocating for equity and inclusion in STEM. The world is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and women in STEM are at the forefront—innovating medical advancements, driving sustainability, expanding artificial intelligence, and exploring the unknown. The future is limitless, but it requires continuous support, mentorship, and opportunities.

Building the Future with WEST

At WEST, we believe that every woman in STEM has the potential to change the world. Our workshops, panels, and networking opportunities provide the tools to lead, the confidence to thrive, and the connections to build a strong professional foundation. By investing in learning, leadership, and community, WEST empowers women to shape their careers, shatter glass ceilings, and redefine what’s possible.

This Women’s History Month, let’s celebrate the power of collective inspiration. WEST Advisory Board member Lauren Perna shares about the value of celebrating Women’s History Month, “Women's History Month is a time to honor the women who came before us and set the stage for women's empowerment. Like most awareness months, it's also an important effort to illuminate the inequalities women face in our world.”
