Real-life Super Heroes

Meet some “Wonder Women” and “Super Men” at the WEST 10th Annual Giving Back Awards!

For most of us, working all day and managing to get dinner on the table is heroic. For others, like Sara Nochur, working all day is a prelude to fundraising that enables young children in rural India to stay in school by providing them with homes, food, and shelter. Or for Elizabeth O’Day, it’s starting a non-profit organization that recycles electronics and uses the resale profits to build computer centers in orphanages around the world. If these sound like incredible feats, it’s because they are. And yet amazing people working in our local STEM community are doing those extraordinary things, and much more.

Join us on January 25th in Cambridge (http://www.westorg.org/2018-01-25-10th-annual-giving-back-awards) to recognize, honor and be inspired by real life heroes. The honorees are role models who successfully balance high profile careers and personal responsibilities while still finding time to make a meaningful difference in their communities. Congratulate Bob Coughlin for promoting innovative therapies while making diversity and inclusion key initiatives, and Karuppiah Kannan for being a STEMTech Ambassador of the DIGITS program and routinely hosting STEM student lab days for sixth-graders, while finding ways to promote women in the workforce. Recognize Brenda Jin for serving on the Board of Girl Develop It, a non-profit organization that teaches thousands of adult women software development every year, removing one of the barriers that have kept women out of technology. Congratulate Lisa Tuttle for being one of the few women to reach the C-suite in IT and thank her for tirelessly promoting and mentoring the next generation of female IT leaders. Be inspired by Jane Rhodes who supports Arlington Academy of Hope, an organization dedicated to bringing educational opportunities to children in rural Uganda, and by Whitney Silkworth who is the Chief Development Officer for Camp Casco, a nonprofit organization that provides a free annual summer camp for childhood cancer patients and survivors.

WEST (www.westorg.org) is a non-profit learning community for women in the enterprise of science and technology. WEST provides the inspiration, knowledge, and connections to enable women to reach their full potential, bringing greater gender balance to STEM professions. We rely heavily on our many volunteers and supporters who routinely go above and beyond to give back to the WEST community. We will be formally thanking some of these extraordinary volunteers and supporters for all they do to keep WEST running smoothly. This year’s awardees are Lee Lawton, Jiyao (Ella) Zhang, Elizabeth Spar and Iris Stammberger.

Join us to congratulate all of these super heroes, network, and support the career advancement of women in science and technology! Make it a team building event!
